My Message on Nursing
No one knows nursing as well as nurses do. Therefore, as a Nurse I can best describe that this is a profession that comprises of nurses who are skilled, intelligent and willing to move ahead with the ever evolving health care system and adapting well to these changes. Nurses are a critical component of the health care system. Providing care to the sick people is one of the many other complex roles that a nurse plays. It appears that nurses can be anywhere from a school to a prison, and we do just nearly anything which makes it difficult for the public to have a clear image of what nurses do. Often times a nurse will introduce self to a patient and will tell them that she will be their nurse for the shift. From this the patient only understands the care she provides but does not get the picture of what she does behind the desk such as, but not limited to –coordinating care experiences, advocating, managing complex information, empowering, collaborating with the health care team, the doctors, pharmacist, social worker and dietician; documenting, applying critical thinking, assessments, planning, decision making and evidence based practice to care. The patient in turn pictures a nurse’s role as a care provider and does not realize the complexity of the role. In various public opinion polls, a high majority of people trust nurses the most. Many bed side skills that a nurse performs can be done by anyone, however, successful implementation of care for a patient can be done by a person, who has a breadth and depth of nursing skills and knowledge; a nurse, which sets her apart from anyone.
